Have you ever heard the phrase “You don’t know what you don’t know”?
Well, one of the key lessons I have learned in the business, both with our own business and coaching plumbers, electricians, and similar businesses is all about knowing what you don’t know.
Do you sometimes look at some of your mates or other businesses in your town or your area that seem really successful?
They seem to grow their business, they seem to make more money, drive a nice car, have good holidays and generally seem a bit more relaxed than you.
And you wonder how they do it.
Have they got a secret recipe or have they just cooked things up in a different way?
And have they learned something that you don’t know?
Well, the answer is pretty simple, the answer is YES.
And one of the key things to growing your business is to realize that you don’t actually know what you don’t know.
Now if you want to take your business from struggling with cash flow, or perhaps you have got a lot of jobs happening but you’re not making as much profit as you want to or it’s just really busy and you feel overwhelmed and chaotic.
There are people there who have solved that problem and cracked that riddle.
And in fact, that is why we do what we do at Profitable Tradie.
We have a system and a process to help you do that.
But I am not going to tell you too much about what we do.
I would rather tell you about one of our members who has actually cracked the code and grown his business.
Brad Martin from Leading Edge Electrical, when he came to us it was himself and an apprentice.
Now he has a business with revenue in excess of two million dollars and he is completely off the tools, he has got a strong team of tradesmen in place, he has got his office sorted out, and life is looking good, he is looking to invest in some commercial property.
What he has learned is really in three key areas.
Number one, he has learned how to price his jobs for profit; he has learned that you need to actually price for a margin, not to just win the work.
Number two, he has put together a hiring process, step by step ten step process to actually hire the right guys.
He has also put a lot of effort into training his team and getting his checklists sorted so that he doesn’t have to supervise all the jobs and be on-site.
And number three, he has also worked on his marketing; he targets the local builders in his area with some direct mail.
He has got his AdWords and his online marketing sorted, as well as a few key tricks of the trade.
So the key lesson today is you don’t know what you don’t know.
If you want to go your business you have got to learn some more.
In fact, if you want to earn more you have to learn more.
Earning is just learning with L plates.
Have a great day
